Why do you think engaging in the AAMC Virtual Community is important?
I love connecting with people that share the same passion in assisting with the pursuits of medical students in their journey.
Do you have a professional skill or expertise that might interest your peers in this community? Are you the “go-to” person at your institution for advice or expertise in a particular subject?
I am not yet a go-to here - but in my formal role I was very good at connecting current students with doctors and past students for networking, advice, mentoring, etc. I really enjoy bringing folks together! I was also very involved with DEI initiatives - served on a board at my school, a national council, and created a resource for URiM elective opportunities for students. I hope to do this in my new role!
What should people in the virtual community contact you about?
I am always open to help brainstorm, figure out problems, and simply just connect!
What was the best book you most recently read (or TV show/movie) that you watched?
Book - The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down - by Haenim Sunim. A wonderful read that I keep going back to!
What’s the best piece of professional advice you have ever received? Why?
Listen. Simply put. So, the student knows you are engaged and willing to help.
What do you think is the best, most challenging, or most unique thing about working in academic medicine (or your field or specialty specifically)?
We can play a small part in the journey of people that could someday be caring for, saving the life of, or simply getting back to health, someone we love and care for!
What do you hope to gain from this online community?
I would love to make connections with folks all over the country to find best practices.
Did you have an unusual path to your current career? Tell us about it.
I was in the business world for 9 years, and always had an eye on higher education - took the plunge in 2007 and never looked back. And in 2013 I found myself in medical education - which I love even more.
