  • Article explores impact of social risk on designing equitable value-based payment systems

A new article published on the Health Affairs blog seeks to demonstrate that value-based payment systems that do not adjust for patient and community social risk factors perpetuate health injustice and systematically increase inequities. The authors clarify the distinction between health care quality and outcomes and address concerns that such adjustment would mask poor quality and disincentivize quality improvement. The article was co-authored by @Philip Alberti, PhD, AAMC senior director of health equity research and policy.
