    Happy Birthday (May 26) to Sally Ride, who would have turned 71 this month. As we all know, Sally Ride was the first American woman to go to outer space, in 1983. (The first woman ever to reach outer space was Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963.)

    In another pioneering accomplishment, last month American astronaut Jessica Watkins (who celebrates her birthday this week!) became the first Black woman on an International Space Station crew. Watkins is the fifth Black woman in history to fly to space, following NASA astronauts Mae Jemison, Stephanie Wilson, Joan Higginbotham and private astronaut Sian Proctor.
