    Systems Thinking, Liberation Philosophy, & the Social Determinants of Health

    NATIONAL WEBINAR AND CONVERSATION

    This webinar will discuss applied theories and practices to affect the political and social determinants of health and will cover legal, political, community, historical, and academic systems thinking that can impact community health. Christopher Williams, MPH, will draw from his extensive experiences as a public health educator and applied health equity leader, cross-trained in pro se law, research, policy, and community organizing. Community leaders from the Southwest community in Washington, DC will also join as co-hosts. Participants can expect a multidisciplinary lecture, followed by a Q&A. The Southwest neighborhood of Washington, DC will be used as the case study. This interactive conversation is intended to take public health is a radically different direction through a liberation framework while supporting cross-training in public health.

    Christopher Williams, MPH
    A public health researcher and university educator who is pursuing his PhD in behavioral and community health. His applied equity work with an emphasis on liberation philosophy is situated in Washington, DC and the Southwest neighborhood. As a "public health systems engineer," he spans public health research, legal writing and research, community organization, policy analysis, and news/media. Mr. Williams is a dynamic community leader and speaker.

    He is a member of the DC Grassroots Planning Coalition – one of the most influential voices on equity in Washington, DC. He serves as the founding editor-in-chief of Southwest Voice – the People's Paper – DC's only neighborhood-based social justice news source. His most recent issue on "poverty pimping" exposed the behavior of systems that perpetuate racial and health inequality. His latest public appearance on Legal Zone has garnered over 8,000 views in the last 24 hours.

    He also helps with community resilience and capacity-building as a documentary producer, artist, sponsor of community awards and events, and facilitator of neighborhood chats.

    Mr. Williams is a former employee of the Association of American Medical Colleges, University of Virginia, Emory University, and the Alliance for Academic Medicine.
