The AAMC’s annual meeting, Learn Serve Lead 2021: The Virtual Experience, is happening Nov. 8-10. Session topics will include: racial injustice, health equity, leadership, mental health and well-being, research in medical education, lessons learned during the pandemic, and more. We are particularly excited about these 3 not-to-be-missed plenary sessions:
Meeting of the Minds
Jonathan Haidt, Heather McGhee and George Will—leading social thinkers across the political spectrum—will discuss the polarization of views across the country. Will there ever again be a time and place for civil discourse that includes respect for opposing views in American society? Can we bridge political divides on issues that affect the health and well-being of people in the US, from access to health care to immigration reform? Can we even begin to talk across political parties and ideologies about the federal debt, gun safety, school vouchers, women’s rights, and LGBTQ+ issues?
Beyond Racism: America’s Caste System
There has been a sustained movement in the United States to better understand racism, its role in our nation’s underpinnings, and its impact on all our lives. Isabel Wilkerson, a gifted historian and storyteller, asks us to examine the role that our country’s unacknowledged caste system also plays in our persistent inequities. She will explain the American caste system, offering examples from history that still resonate today, and address our odds of annihilating this centuries-old system to craft a better and more equitable future.
Dare to Lead: In Conversation with Brené Brown
Brené Brown challenges the assumption that individuals with stellar academic and career achievements must have natural leadership talent. She believes the world is in desperate need of braver leaders, and that they can and do exist at every level of an organization. Her research studies shed light on what it truly means to be a brave leader, and the results may surprise you.
