Under normal conditions, it's a challenge for healthcare providers, researchers, administrators and learners in the academic medicine community to prioritize their health and wellness. However, the significant amount of stress these individuals face as they lead the response against COVID-19 is quickly becoming its own crisis. Challenges such as resource shortages, funding and budget cuts, loss of boundaries, and the merging of our personal and professional lives are only increasing the levels of fear and anxiety.
The AAMC recently hosted an online conversation about steps that leaders in academic medicine can take to ensure their teams feel safe and supported. Panelists described the strategies they are using to maintain their own health and wellness; how they are managing other crises (i.e., racism and police brutality, recession and job loss); and how they are supporting the well-being of others during this difficult time.
