Research suggests there is a magic formula for creative breakthrough in a career: the hot streak.
A recent study in Nature examined the concept of career hot streaks, defined as bursts of high-impact works clustered together in close succession. Specifically, the sequence to arrive at this magic goes like this: person engages in exploration in their field (wide experimentation), then finds something that works, then exploits it (intensely focuses on replicating that success). My grandmother also believed in hot streaks at the slot machines - luckily I only took her to Vegas once!
