The AAMC has published two new data snapshots focused on themes of gender equity in academic medicine. Perceptions of Equity in Advancement Among U.S. Medical School Faculty explores how research on women faculty has focused on women faculty as a whole compared to men or on early-career women faculty. Understanding Childcare Offerings of U.S. Medical Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic examines research that has shown there to be a gendered impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on women’s careers across multiple factors, from publishing to promotion and leadership opportunities.

 Key findings from Perceptions of Equity in Advancement Among U.S. Medical School Faculty include: 

• Overall, men were more satisfied with their pace of advancement than women at all ranks. 

• Men and women across all ranks had the greatest disagreement about whether their schools provided equal opportunities regardless of gender. 
• Associate professors, specifically women, were the least satisfied with their pace of advancement. 

Key findings from Understanding Childcare Offerings of U.S. Medical Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic include: 

• Forty-nine percent of the responding institutions indicated that they provided childcare options for employees prior to the pandemic. 
•  93% of institutions that did not provide childcare support prior to COVID-19 did not publicly announce expanded options in response to the pandemic. 

What are the data snapshots? AAMC Medical School Operations Data Snapshots are published periodically throughout the year. Each data snapshot examines previously published or unpublished data from a variety of AAMC data sources and addresses issues such as medical school finances, strategic planning, and faculty and staff workplace policies. These data snapshots aim to highlight key findings from AAMC data collections and reports, raise awareness of available AAMC data for operational decision-making, and encourage broad participation in AAMC data collections.
