The issue of resilience and well-being in academic medicine has been an AAMC priority for several years.  Even before the recent pandemic, we know that "burnout" among physicians, in particular, is associated with marked high levels of anxiety, depression, insomnia, emotional and physical exhaustion, loss of cognitive focus, and even thoughts of suicide-at a higher rate than in the general population.  With the added burden of pandemic response, it's more important than ever to keep the well-being of our clinical care colleagues in mind.  I'm mindful of the rest of us as well, off the front-lines, who are experiencing disruptions and anxiety of the highest order.

What self-care practices are you employing right now to manage your resilience? How are you caring for yourself as well as for others during this difficult time?

I have a friend who regularly sends me what I have called 'wellness stuff'. I'm starting to make sure I read them now...

here's the last one he texted me

One thing we did that worked quite well was a Saturday AM Leadership Development webinar for department chairs and a small group of other leaders.  Our psychiatry chair did it - 20 minutes on leadership in times of peril and <10 minutes on managing your own anxiety.  It was a hit.

Hi Julie: Thanks for responding to my question about what's working to promote/enhance resilience. It's good to hear your organization is proactive in fostering well-being and resilience.

On the individual level, I've been encouraging our colleagues to be conscientious about hydration. It's easy to forget about our own needs when we are stretched thin. If we are going to help others as best possible, we need to care for ourselves - and foster resilience. Take the time to hydrate - and pee! Of course, follow with hand washing.
