Question of the Week (Feb. 3-7): Addressing Gender Equity

  • 1.  Question of the Week (Feb. 3-7): Addressing Gender Equity

    Posted 02-03-2020 05:01:00 PM
One of the most persistent, challenging, and important problems we face as a professional community is the lack of sufficient diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organizations and leadership.

ICYMI, last week the AAMC launched a new initiative to address and eliminate gender inequities

To spur action on this issue, the AAMC Board of Directors developed and endorsed the AAMC Statement on Gender Equity to serve as a call to action to our community to address this critical national issue with the energy and sustained commitment required to effect lasting change. The statement identifies four areas that require immediate action: the physician and scientific workforce, leadership and compensation, research, and recognition.

Which area do you feel like you and your team are best positioned to address?

"For too long, gender inequities have persisted in our communities, limiting the contributions and the promise of many of our colleagues and learners." - David Skorton, MD, AAMC President and CEO

Hi everyone - the results of the AAMC survey on gender harassment among medical school faculty were recently released and I thought it was relevant to share on this thread.  I'd love to hear feedback and/or thoughts on results -- please reply to this discussion to join the conversation.

One-third of women at American medical schools have experienced gender harassment, according to a recent AAMC survey of nearly 5,500 faculty members. Earlier this year, the AAMC called on leaders in academic medicine to
address gender equity at the nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals. The AAMC is working with constituents across academic medicine on this critical issue and has established a collection of resources, toolkits, effective practices, and other materials to address gender equity. On Oct. 28, the AAMC will host a webinar with speakers from the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the National Institutes of Health to discuss national data, key recommendations, and how these organizations are working to change the culture to maximize talent and end sexual harassment.
