Next week the AAMC Research and Action Institute will release a new report, The Way Forward Starts Now: Lessons from COVID-19, which makes recommendations to policymakers to begin preparing-now-for the next pandemic. This new report is a follow-up to one the AAMC issued last summer to reset the trajectory of the country's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now, in the fourth surge of the pandemic, we feel an urgency to offer these latest recommendations to ensure the nation is prepared for future public health threats. We're sharing a brief summary of the recommendations here with our virtual community, and will distribute the full report more broadly next week.
10 recommendations to prepare the nation for the next pandemic:
1. The White House must lead the national pandemic response and ensure coordination among departments and agencies.
2. The federal government must engage industry and research universities at the outset of the next public health emergency and commit to advance purchases of diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines.
3. The federal government must ensure an effective supply chain for all critical goods and materials.
4. Congress must appropriate robust and continuous funding for public health infrastructure.
5. Federal and state governments must relax regulatory restrictions on clinical care -- regulatory, licensing, and billing requirements -- during a national emergency.
6. Government and the private sector must invest in data infrastructure to promote health and health equity.
7. Federal and state policy must increase the supply and well-being of physicians and other health professionals.
8. Congress must continue its ongoing commitment to basic and clinical research.
9. The federal government should expand and improve health insurance, augmenting the nation's system of health care coverage and making it available regardless of employment status.
10. All stakeholders must commit to improving equity and patient-centered care through engagement with communities.
We hope you will help us share these recommendations next week with policymakers and other leaders in your communities and at your institutions.
