Always remember that the person asking the questions is the one in control. While the other person is answering, you are thinking of the next question. Also, remember that the person with the greatest awareness of the situation has the responsibility for sensitive expression, hopefully that will always be you. Follow these simple rules:
1. Reflect through paraphrasing what you think the other person is telling you.
2. If you see anger, try to understand fear.
3. Never talk about people. Talk about situations - it's OK to talk about how situations affect people.

Subject: For Your Learning Friday: 3 Questions to Consider During Conflict
When conflict occurs we have a choice in how we will respond to it. We can choose a destructive response such as retaliation, which will prolong and intensify the conflict, or we can choose a constructive response such as reaching out to the other person. Reaching out involves making the first move to resolve the conflict. If done effectively, it can break the tension and get the resolution process started. However, before you reach out, be sure consider these three questions:
- Have I had enough time to cool off?
- Am I really ready to listen to what the other person wants and needs?
- Do I understand my own needs and interests related to the issue?
If the answer to any of these questions is 'no' give yourself more time, but be careful not to take too long and fall into a conflict avoidance cycle.
What are YOUR constructive responses that you use when you find yourself in a conflict?
