  • 1.  Student Waiver for Return to Clinical Learning?

    Posted 06-09-2020 09:36:00 AM
Good morning - I have heard of some schools having students sign a waiver of liability as they return to learning in the clinical environment.  This is not something that we are considering and don't think the LCME would approve of such an action.  I'm curious what, if anything, other schools are doing on this front. Thanks for anything that you can share.

    Hi Kelly:

We are also not having a waiver. We discussed this with legal and as a leadership team and were worried about the message it sent and potential unintended consequences across the institution for setting a precedent about opting in to who we will and won't care for.

At George Washington School of Medicine, we discussed the idea of a student waiver with senior leadership and legal counsel.  Given the inherent risks of medical practice irrespective of the Covid pandemic, we decided against the waiver idea.  Our legal counsel also was not in favor of such for similar reasons
