    As children with autism, Down syndrome, and similar disabilities reach adulthood, they face unique challenges navigating the health care system. Medical schools are just beginning to train physicians in how to treat them. AAMCNews recently took a deep look at changes underway in medicine to address provider knowledge gaps. 


    American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD) sponsors the National Curriculum Initiative in Developmental Medicine, a program to define and integrate the concepts of developmental medicine into the medical school curriculum of every medical school in the United States. 


    The AAMC and several other organizations are working through the Action to Build Clinical Confidence & Culture to disseminate national strategies that better prepare clinicians to serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 


    April is World Autism Month. Autism Speaks offers helpful intervention and treatment resources for individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
