As the COVID pandemic continues to raise concerns about safety and our ability to create safe spaces in the workplace, many of our institutions have adopted a hybrid workforce model for eligible positions. This presents a number of challenges for leaders as they consider how to balance physical safety, personal work preferences, and productivity in alignment with organizational expectations. To address this, leaders must employ effective and personalized communication strategies and adapt to this changing environment by engaging employees in meaningful dialogue about their preferences, concerns and expectations.

As a leader, how will you engage your employees in these hybrid workforce discussions?

To begin the discussion, we've included a few questions and suggestions for your consideration:

    • What is your ideal balance between office-based and remote work? Be sure to clarify expectations and business needs.
    • Do you understand workplace expectations and what constitutes successful performance in your role and on the team? Clarify your expectations, align them with organizational practices, and remain flexible as these conversations should be on-going and may evolve over time.
    • What are your concerns with this hybrid model? Understanding and addressing issues early on, as they arise, will ensure a successful hybrid workforce model.
    • How and when do you feel most engaged? Create fully immersed activities that foster engagement, team building, and establish team norms for creating a positive organizational culture.
    • How can I best support you during this time of hybrid working? Soliciting feedback, listening to employees concerns, and asking for clarity will enable you to build trust, strengthen relationships, and create a shared purpose among individuals and teams.

What other questions, tips, or strategies do you have to share?
