  • 1.  Question of the Week: Telehealth—here to stay?

    Posted 02-08-2021 10:00:00 AM

    There’s no question that the coronavirus pandemic has shifted the way we work. As we reassess what health care looks like in a world living with COVID-19, it is crucial that we understand how telehealth impacts medical education and training, the delivery system and its workforce, and patients' access to care.

    So for this Question of the Week, we want to know:

    • What has been your experience as a provider shifting to telehealth care? What has been working (or maybe not) that is worth sharing with your peers here in the community network?
    • Or, if you’re not working in the clinical environment, have you had an experience with a telehealth provider that was surprising, interesting, or worth sharing? We’d love to hear about it.

    ICYMI, here are additional resources related to telehealth innovations that:

    • Highlight how the AAMC and its member institutions are implementing and using telehealth to provide high-quality care and improve access;
    • Provide regulatory support for telehealth at health care institutions, including education about recent updates;
    • Share learnings across academic medicine about telehealth implementation and training; and
    • Uncover insights from research and other literature about the impact of telehealth on access and workforce.

    The AAMC just released its second report in a series focused on competencies for telehealth. The competencies provide a foundation of support to ensure medical schools and teaching hospitals are providing excellent training to physicians and other clinicians in all forms of telehealth. You can get your copy at  https://store.aamc.org/telehealth-competencies-across-the-learning-continuum.html

    The competencies are for use in:

    • Engaging diverse health care professionals in collaborative telehealth discussions, including cross-continuum and cross-discipline colleagues.
    • Conducting gap analyses of local curricula and training programs.
    • Planning individual professional development.
    • Developing curricular learning objectives.
    • Developing assessment tools.
    • Furthering research and scholarship in medical education and telehealth.
    • Guiding the strategic integration of telehealth into the curricula and the clinical learning environment.

      The AAMCNews team just published a new piece by Kimberly Noel, MD, MPH on this topic, "What every doctor needs to know about telemedicine." You can access the article here: https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/what-every-doctor-needs-know-about-telemedicine

      "Health care is undergoing colossal change in digital innovation and remote practice. If we are going to provide equitable, high-quality care, we can't afford to be passive adopters but rather must be engaged innovators. All medical schools must formally incorporate telehealth training into their curricula, and providers should participate in continuing medical education. If we don't, we will lose the chance to harness the power of telehealth to improve care for our patients and society."
      - Dr. Noel

      Kimberly Noel, MD, MPH, is the deputy chief medical information officer and telehealth director at Stony Brook Medicine on Long Island, New York, and an assistant professor of medicine at Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. She practices preventive medicine with an expertise in remote patient monitoring and telehealth practice.

      New report available! Access "Sustaining Telehealth Success: Integration Imperatives and Best Practices for Advancing Telehealth in Academic Health Systems" via the AAMC Store now.

      As telehealth has become an even more widely accepted mode of delivering care, academic medical centers (AMCs) are examining how telehealth can advance their strategic goals. AMCs must learn how to integrate telehealth capabilities into their everyday clinical care and operations.

      This report from the AAMC's Future of Academic Medicine Series will help health system leaders and telehealth managers to critically assess, design, implement, and integrate telehealth programs across mission areas. It presents effective strategies and successful practices from leaders at 15 AMCs that have leading telehealth programs.
