  • 1.  Ultimate Guide to…resources for first-generation medical students

    Posted 09-02-2021 07:07:00 AM

The AAMC recently launched a social media campaign aimed at first-generation medical school students and the specific issues they face. Over the next few months, the AAMC will be showcasing short interviews with first-gen students, from recent graduates to professors, who share advice and resources for current and future first-gen students.

While you stay tuned for those upcoming interviews, we’re including additional AAMC resources below. Please share these with students—and their advisors—who may find value and inspiration in these materials.

With it being #firstgenday, we wanted to remind folks of this great list of resources compiled and shared a while back, and ask how you are recognizing your first-generation medical students today? If you're a first-generation college grad or medical student, take a minute to reflect on that accomplishment and what it means to you!

Sending a big shout-out to all you've accomplished and all these future generations will accomplish!

    Happy #FirstGenDay!

I admit, I had no idea what I was doing or where I'd end up on my college and grad school journey. But I definitely remember my parents' pride. Honored to bring a first-gen perspective to academia &
    #health-equity.

Congratulations to Denisse Rojas Marquez, MD, MPP, and Jirayut "New" Latthivongskorn, MD, MPH, recipients of this year's Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare!

They're speaking right now at Learn Serve Lead, and wow, what an inspiring session!

Drs. Rojas Marquez and Latthivongskorn are first-generation immigrants, physicians, and advocates for health justice and education equity. Growing up as undocumented immigrants in the U.S., both experienced barriers that many immigrant families face in accessing and navigating health care systems. Dr. Rojas Marquez and Dr. Latthivongskorn's experiences inspired them to become doctors, to improve health for all marginalized communities, through direct patient care and shaping policies.

Both Dr. Rojas Marquez and Dr. Latthivongskorn are co-founders and current board members of Pre-Health Dreamers (PHD), a nonprofit organization that supports undocumented immigrant students who are interested in health professions. As a national network with peer-to-peer mentorship, PHD members build community, share resources, and advocate for increased education access while pursuing their professional goals.

The pair are also known for their advocacy in support of the rights of undocumented immigrants and DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients in the United States. Dr. Rojas Marquez has testified in the U.S. Congress, and Dr. Latthivongskorn has served as a plaintiff in the lawsuit to defend the DACA program at the Supreme Court, along with meeting President Biden to urge passage of immigration legislation. For their work with PHD and their advocacy, Drs. Rojas Marquez and Latthivongskorn were recognized by Forbes magazine in the publication's "30 Under 30" list of influential entrepreneurs in education.
