Feeling overwhelmed at how to make use of all the data the AAMC provides? (We sometimes feel the same way.) In this Tip Tuesday, we’re offering some practical uses for the data in the recently released 2020 Report on Residents.
The report is an annual AAMC compilation of data on the characteristics of medical school graduates and residents, including test scores, demographics, and professional activities after residency. The data come from multiple sources and focus on issues across states, specialties, and phases of the GME continuum. Find highlights from the report here.
This report can be used to:
- Have discussions with medical school applicants and residency applicants about specialty trends and career interests
- Communicate the impact of research and volunteer experiences of entering residents
- Inform conversations about diversity and inclusion by looking at demographics of residents and the physician workforce
- Inform conversations with federal policymakers about geographic- and specialty-specific physician workforce shortages
- Inform conversations with local policymakers about state-specific physician retention and workforce shortage issues
- Support research and analysis into performance on assessments, such as USMLE® exams
