Tip Tuesday: Puerto Rico’s 4 medical schools are LCME accredited

This week’s tip addresses a misperception the AAMC sometimes encounters from people within academic medicine. As a reminder, Puerto Rico’s 4 medical schools are LCME-accredited. They are: Ponce Health Sciences University School of Medicine; San Juan Bautista School of Medicine; Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine; and University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. Unlike some nearby institutions in the Caribbean, these are not classified as foreign or international medical schools, and their graduates do not require ECFMG certification to practice medicine in the United States.

As you know, Puerto Rico is a US territory and its residents are US citizens. No passport is needed to travel between Puerto Rico and the mainland United States. Medical students in Puerto Rico who travel to the mainland for residency interviews, for example, do not need special documentation or travel approval.

Puerto Rico’s 4 medical schools are LCME accredited

As we approach residency application season, this feels like a good time to issue a gentle reminder to the entire academic medicine community: Puerto Rico’s medical schools are LCME accredited, residents of Puerto Rico are US citizens, no travel approval or special documentation is required.
