  • 1.  Preparing for a COVID-related death or serious illness

As much as I hate to bring this up, with the current surge underway and increasing cases in our community, I'd like to prepare for a possible death or serious illness of a student/resident/faculty member at our institution.

I know AAMC has toolkits for responding to a student suicide, etc., but COVID is obviously different.  In the past, we might have gathered a class in a lecture hall to explain the event, provide immediate support, answer questions, etc., but that isn't an option now.

Is anyone else working on this, or has anyone (sadly) been through this who can share lessons learned and best practices?

    Dear Alicia,

Sadly, we worked on this at the start of the pandemic for the ACGME. It is in Section II of the ACGME's Guidebook for Promoting Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Please let me know if you would like to speak more,

    Best,

    Lyuba
