I was recently reminded of the importance of understanding
context and background before assessing something at face value.
I saw Picasso's "
At the Lapin Agile" and thought it was sort of... disappointing compared to his other work. But then I learned the story behind it: the Lapin Agile was his favorite cabaret club. His good friend and drinking buddy tragically died there (that event may have triggered his blue period). He then had an affair with a married woman--a club regular--that his deceased friend had loved (pictured). He then whipped up this painting, at the request of the club owner, in exchange for free food and drinks. Put himself (self-portrait) right there in front to ensure he would always have VIP status at the club. Will paint for food. This is now my favorite Picasso.

Question of the Week: Tell us about a work of art that has resonated with you or made you think differently
Last week @David Skorton shared some ways that appreciation of the arts and humanities may increase our visual intelligence, help us solve problems, and make us more empathetic. Is there a work of art that has been particularly meaningful to you, or made you think or see differently? Share it with us here-upload the image or include a link in your reply to this discussion.
