Thank you for the welcome and the great provocative question, Carolyn! I already saw in my role before I came here, an update to our dress code policies, becoming more casual - dress down Friday and jeans Friday, expanded to any time. The caveat, of course, was to use your best judgement and dress based on representing the organization when you were meeting with with constituents outside of the organization.
However, when you look at fashion trends in general, athleisurewear had already been on the rise and now dominates, even in high fashion. And it's already taken a turn for the professional setting - see random pinterest board example below -
But that is the great concept of fashion - how it influences and is influenced by society and culture and history. I mean, the little black dress, even came at a time when it was viewed as unconventional and met with resistance and now is a staple in every closet and the most iconic fashion piece - and put Coco Channel on the map, really. (Not surprising if you know anything about Channel and her personality, but I digress).
It's interesting - Covid has cracked holes in a lot of policies, programs, and arguments over the last 19 months. Some big, some small. One such argument, perhaps, is what is 'appropriate office wear?' and do we put too much focus on our outward 'professional appearance', rather than what results we deliver? Time will tell, and it will also tell whether this more casual style is here to stay or simply a passing fad...

Subject: Welcome Penny Schnarrs, AAMC Community Program Manager
I am thrilled to introduce @Penny Schnarrs, our new AAMC Community Program Manager. She will be responsible for managing (and growing!) the AAMC's virtual communities program (yes, the whole network!) and you'll be seeing her face a lot around the Open Forum Community.
Penny returns to the AAMC after a decade hiatus. During her time away, she and her wife, Mel, and their dog, Riley, moved back to Pittsburgh so that Mel could become a fellowship program director at a children's hospital there. Penny most recently wrapped up a role at Highmark Health in internal communications, where she partnered closely with human resources, strategy, and executives to increase employee engagement, improve corporate communications, and use new tools and resources to create new ways of connecting and collaborating. She is also a part-time faculty member at Point Park University. Penny has spent her 20+ year career building meaningful connections to create positive impact and is excited to do so again at the AAMC and through this community. Ask Penny about pop culture, travel, theatre, fashion, Disney, restaurants, or self-care.
