Living in Chicago, I can attest that the Int'l Museum of Surgical Science is interesting for multiple reasons, one of them being that it is one of the OG stately mansions right on the lake just a few blocks north of the Magnificent Mile of shops, restaurants, and entertainment (and traffic). I added a few snaps I took during Open House Chicago last fall. There is a replica of an apothecary right in the house - my father (and great-uncle, and sister) were pharmacists so they thought it was interesting.

I'm also going to suggest the Pearson Museum at the SIU School of Medicine, in Springfield, IL. Exhibits include a life size-pharmacy and a medical office, and an early wheelchair with a wicker seat. If you decide to visit, please call 217-545-4261, to make sure there are no reservations for classes or events at that time.

Not in the US,  but the Museo Galileo in Florence has an interesting permanent exhibit on the History of Medicine from the Greeks to 18th century Florence. It's a smaller museum, so if you get tired of standing in line for the Uffizi head over!

The Museo Galileo in Florence owns one of the world's major collection of scientific instruments, particularly the original instruments of Galileo Galilei. Both museum and research institute, the Museo Galileo is dedicated to the research, documentation and dissemination of the history of science in the broadest senses.

Is this the trip you are taking us all on, Penny? I forget! Have a lovely time in Florence. I have not been there since I was in early college.

LOL @Anderson, Max- I didn't cover the "champions volunteer appreciation vacation in Florence" on the last agenda, or did I?

And thanks, it's my wife's first time in Italy - I can't wait to see what she thinks. I've been lucky enough to have been in Florence a few times but this will be my first time in Venice (gotta get there before it sinks).

The OHSU Library maintains a wonderful History of Medicine room on its Marquam Hill campus in Portland, Ore. It's by appointment, with more information here: https://www.ohsu.edu/historical-collections-archives.

There is a small area of the Sachsenhausen Internment Camp just outside Berlin that has a display addressing some of the medical experiments performed on prisoners at the camp prior to and during WW II. Maybe others have seen similar accounts at some of the other sites?

The Berlin Museum of Medical History at the Charité building is closed until this summer, but looks to be worth a visit: https://www.bmm-charite.de/en/index.html

Thanks for the lead on Florence. I have long wondered if an alumni tour to medical museums and key locations in Europe might be of interest to alums. Is anyone doing something like this?
