For Your Learning Friday: Haunted Medical Schools

Time to embrace the spookiness of the season. We’ve called out a few institutions that are—allegedly—haunted. Did we miss yours?

Fordham University is home to several tales of haunted halls, catalogued by its library and made more eerie after “The Exorcist” was filmed in the school's Hughes Hall. Students have claimed to see a small boy wandering the hall and locked doors regularly swinging open.

A dormitory there, Finley, was once Fordham's medical school. It had lofted rooms where medical students could watch cadaver dissections. Those cadavers were also held in the basement. Students who have lived there since say they’ve woken up in the night feeling as if they were a cadaver being tagged — a tugging on a toe, or someone grabbing at their throat. Residents also say they’ve seen ghostly students peering down from the loft.

The Ginter House at Virginia Commonwealth University is home to several problematic features, including 2 haunted restrooms. The University’s Brandcenter called in a paranormal research team (twice) to explore issues in that building. And the Egyptian Building, the oldest structure on campus that continues to house medical offices and staff, has been the site of several unexplained phenomena.

If you want to check out all the legends, horrors and lore associated with Ohio State, the university has conveniently provided a campus map to make your haunted tour easier. Check out the true story of Dr. Death.

University of Missouri Kansas City boasts of 5 historically eerie locations on campus. University staff are especially fond of a ghost named Andre who lives in the library.

Finally, @Max Anderson recently shared some fairly creepy photos of an old pathology auditorium at the University of Illinois Chicago campus [https://communities.aamc.org/discussion/fun-contest-friday-show-us-the-most-unique-thing-at-your-institution#bm83d7a8d5-1b53-4a50-8d3b-1093f1758342]. Max didn’t claim it was haunted, but we definitely wouldn’t want to get caught there alone at night.
