National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, Disrupting Ableism and Advancing STEM: A National Leadership Summit.
We encourage you to share and to sign up, if interested.
Although people with disabilities are the largest minority group in the United States, stigma and ableism continue to limit opportunities for disabled people to fully contribute to and be successful in the STEM ecosystem.
The public is invited to join us for a transformational set of conversations on Disrupting Ableism and Advancing STEM.
The series will begin with a National Leadership Summit from 11:00AM-4:30 PM EST on June 5, 2023.
This hybrid launch event will take place in-person at the National Academies of Sciences' Keck Center in Washington D.C. and online.
Panels and presentations will explore issues related to the accessibility and inclusivity of STEM workplaces for persons with disabilities. With asset-based and intersectional approaches to understanding the experiences of persons with disabilities across STEM workplaces, the agenda will include discussions of disability identity, workplace ecosystems, systemic institutional barriers limiting career advancement, and access and inclusion practices and policies that support and advance persons with disabilities in the STEM.
The National Leadership Summit will be followed by a series of virtual events on specific topics related to Disrupting Ableism and Advancing STEM:
- June 7 Creating Disability-Inclusive Workforces and Workplaces
- June 13 Fostering Effective Mentorship in the STEM Ecosystem
- June 15 Cultivating Accessible Educational Pathways and Spaces
- June 16 Rooting out Bias and Barriers
Agendas will be posted for all events in the series as they become available.
The public registration will begin in late April. In-person spaces will be limited.
All events will include an ASL interpreter and CART interpretation. Requests for additional accommodations can be submitted on the registration form. Slides and electronic documents will be shared online prior to the event.
Event recordings will be posted online after their conclusion and a proceeding summarizing the series of events will be published.
The summary will be freely available for online reading and download in fall of 2023. It will be accompanied by papers commissioned for the series and a resource collection on disability inclusion approaches for conferences and conference planning, which will be prepared in cooperation with accessibility consultants at the DO-IT Center of the University of Washington. This series is supported by the National Science Foundation.
