  • 1.  Grade Appeals Increasing?

    Posted 10-16-2024 09:31:00 AM

I had an interesting discussion with colleagues of mine today about what appears to be a pattern of increased clinical clerkship grade appeals. This is anecdotal for now, but has caused a bit of a stir in my network.

I'm curious if other clerkship directors have been experiencing an uptick in grade appeals?

Without any real data, I would think this might be a reaction to Step 1 going P/F, leading students to focus more on their clerkship grades as differentiators for residency applications.

Since our classes are pass/fail, we have seen an uptick in students looking for ways to "stand out."

We had a few Pathways, like a Research option, but more have been developed at student request. We just approved the HEALERS pathway, which gives students the option to do a deeper and wider dive into the Medical Humanities (History, Environmental Determinants of Health, Arts, Literature, Ethics, Religion, and Philosophy). Our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion team offers a Pathway, as do several other departments. Maybe something like that could help your students feel like they can shine without fighting over a grade?
