We started classes FOR THE FIRST TIME this week at the Thomas F. Frist, Jr. College of Medicine at Belmont University here in Nashville. Here's a glimpse of our inaugural class profile--all accomplished after receiving Preliminary accreditation and opening up our Admissions portal in November!

Well, that's awesome! Hope the first year goes well for the students, faculty, and staff. What oath do you guys recite at your white coat ceremony?

Our Office of Student Affairs and Diversity developed an oath that was drawn from our mission, vision, and values statements. It's part of an iterative, "call and response" process whereby the class will cultivate their own collective oath to use at graduation in 2028.

One of the activities our students do during our Medical Humanities Week is to look at the Hippocratic Oath and the WMA Oath of Geneva, consider the historical context, and then write a class oath. It is great to watch them articulate the values they want for themselves.

We just have them recite the Hippocratic oath but we do have an activity called Journey to the White Coat. The new first-year medical students submit a statement saying, "I want to be the kind of physician who....". Then the class votes on them and the top eight are printed in their White Coat Ceremony program but we also include a sheet of all the comments submitted. The activity is completed over three days and during orientation week. I attached a publication that was written up by previous/current staff about this. They revisit those statements periodically throughout their time as a medical student.
