Did you know that only 3% of physicians identify as disabled, and only 1% of these are women?

The pathway to and through medical education to practice is riddled with barriers and biases that may lead women with disabilities to exit the biomedical workforce. With such a small population of women with disabilities in medicine, there is a dearth of mentorship and support available to students and trainees.

Allison, Diana and I believe that Medicine could use an infusion of first-hand experience from people with the lived experience of having a disability so let's change these statistics.

To combat the dearth of mentorship and opportunity available to women with disabilities in medicine, The Docs With Disabilities Initiative is launching the WWDIM Mentoring Group. In the pilot year, this small group will consist of 12 mentees and 12 mentors for a one-year mentoring experience.

The mission of the Docs with Disabilities Initiative, Women with Disabilities in Medicine (WWDIM) Mentorship Program is to help support women with disabilities in pursuing a medical career. By connecting women with disabilities with mentors who have navigated the medical field, we hope to support and encourage mentees in all levels of their medical training. We also hope to increase the visibility of docs with disabilities and encourage others to consider a career in medicine.

    Aims:

To create a collective that will bring women with disabilities in medicine together for mentorship, networking, and collaboration.

To provide social and practical resources, education, and other supports to promote success among women with disabilities in medicine.

    .
