When Ross McKinney, Jr., MD, arrived at the AAMC in 2016 as our new chief scientific officer, he identified three big challenges facing medical researchers at that time:
· excessive regulatory burdens
· the need to better integrate research and clinical care
· the need for greater incentives to attract new researchers to the field.
In a recent AAMCNews interview, Dr. McKinney, who retired this month after more than 40 years in academic medicine, offers his assessment of the community's progress on these challenges.
Are these still the most pressing challenges facing medical researchers? What would you add to the list? What challenges should the AAMC's next Chief Scientific Officer be prepared to address?
