  • 1.  Question of the Week: Do seasonal allergies seem to be getting worse?

    Posted 04-15-2024 08:34:00 AM

In my house, the answer is a resounding YES. The seasonal-allergy-triggered eczema, asthma, itchy eyes and runny noses are here.

Thoughts and prayers--again--to the people in Wichita and the other Top 10 most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies:

    • Wichita, Kansas
    • Virginia Beach, Virginia
    • Greenville, South Carolina
    • Dallas, Texas
    • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
    • Tulsa, Oklahoma
    • Richmond, Virginia
    • Des Moines, Iowa
    • Raleigh, North Carolina
    • Fayetteville, Arkansas

Experts say warmer temperatures (climate change) and something called “botanical sexism” are to blame for worsening allergies. @Bridget Balch explains why in this recent AAMCNews article.

In Springfield, IL, our allergies are worse. I feel like I should own stock in Flonase, Allegra, and Benadryl.  This "early spring" has been brutal for me, and my daughters. My son and husband are showing signs of allergies, but still claim they don't have allergies. FWIW, I feel less stuffy when I wear my mask to outside activities.

    Opinions my own.

I feel like every year I have to rediscover a mix of allergy medicines that work to relieve symptoms -- it changes annually. This year, Zyrtec seems to be working (plus nasal spray, plus eye drops...). @Bridget Balch - I'd be curious if there are any key takeaways from your article research that you can share here in the community (and/or information that maybe didn't make it into the article that was interesting).

I also recently learned about "botanical sexism," but in a much less academic way: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6Ja0yPrleM/
