  • 1.  Question of the Week: What is your best conference networking tip?

    Posted 10-31-2022 07:23:00 AM

Learn Serve Lead 2022: The AAMC Annual Meeting is happening – in person – next month. Many other professional conferences seem to be returning to in-person format too. We fear our collective networking skills might be… rusty.

What is your best piece of advice for networking at conferences and events? Please share your advice by responding to this discussion.

(P.S. - Are you attending Learn Serve Lead? We'd love to see you while we are all there! Stop by the Pavilion in the Exhibit Hall to say hello!)

I don't think I'm alone when I say that I'm really bad at remembering names! So, my advice (and I definitely need to build up my own courage for this) is to not be afraid to ask for people's names a second or third time, if needed ("Can you remind me of your name? I want to make sure I remember). It's totally okay to also say you're bad with names - people understand!  And then to further cement their name/contact in my mind, I plan to ask to take pictures of people's badges so that I can connect on LinkedIn with everyone once we get back home! Some people still carry business cards, but that may not be the case for everyone, so the picture method is very handy (and eco-friendly - save the trees!).

    What's your name again?

I'm not going to LSL, but I did just get back from another conference (Association of Educational Communications and Technology or AECT). I agree with Stephanie's comments about asking people for their name again - conferences can be overwhelming, especially when there are a lot of people attending. Plus, there is growing interest in researching social anxiety as we (hopefully) emerge out of the pandemic. Here is one example:

There will likely be people wearing masks at the conference and that's perfectly fine. Allow people the space to feel as comfortable as they need to be, especially in large group settings. I can attest from my own recent experience that I felt very fatigued every day and I think a big part of it is I have not had many situations during the past 2.5 years where I was around so many people. I don't think there was fear of COVID, I think it was just cognitive overload in general.

Have a wonderful conference and if you need to go back to the hotel in the middle of the day to take a nap, do it!

Well, I hate to self promote but I would recommend this great AM last page my colleagues and I put together on being strategic as you approach conferencing!  Here's the reference:

I really like this AM Last Page and video from Academic Medicine about crafting an elevator pitch so you have it ready to go when you run into a colleague and want to introduce yourself and your work. The Last Page authors share easy to follow steps that make a daunting task seem manageable.

One more tip that may be useful (and perhaps obvious), but remember to let people know you're attending a conference ahead of time! This can serve to both give a heads up to people that may follow you on social media that you'll be posting a lot during the conference (especially if you're an active Twitter user), or it can help you make connections and plans to meet up with people when you're on-site.

To help promote your attendance (or the fact that you're speaking!), the AAMC's digital engagement team has prepared a few graphics you can download and use on Twitter, LinkedIn, in email, or in any other channels you use to communicate.
