The healthcare labor market is strong, and jobs—both clinical and non-clinical—at medical schools and teaching hospitals are always in demand. But I’m following 2 trends this year in the broader labor market that I suspect might have an impact on academic medicine too:
1) Layoffs in the technology and retail sectors. What might this mean for healthcare and higher ed—opportunities to hire candidates with alternative skillsets and experience? More competition for open positions everywhere?
2) Widespread use of technology to automate recruitment and hiring processes. If your institution uses these systems, are you sure the right candidates are making it through to your desk? What is the applicant/candidate experience and does it convey the right message about your institution?
