How do you highlight your alumni authors when they have a new publication?

    Hi -

We include any information about books published by our alumni in the class notes section of our magazine and on our website. We're in the middle of working on our January issue and a redesign, so this could change, but we'll be including it a separate section under the notes.

    Hi @Tiffany Penn

We include books and publications that are authored by alumni under the "alumni updates" section of our digital monthly newsletter that is distributed to our MD, resident and fellow alumni. In a recent edition, we also shared an interview that was submitted to us (example copy below). Most of these are self-submitted and we also subscribe to Google alerts that mention our institution and include updates that we learn about from conversations. @Celine Robins may have additional input on this as she's the curator and distributor of our newsletter.

Jim Amos (91MD, 96R–psychiatry) was interviewed by Psychiatric Times for the More than Medicine series. Amos discussed his hobby of juggling and some of the associated health benefits.

    Hi @Tiffany Penn,

Like Alyssa, we include alumni authors in Class Notes of our magazine, Quarterly. We also post them to a section of our website entitled, "Class Notes and Alumni Updates," which is curated from several sections of the magazine. There is a sample of alumni author from the Classes of 2003 and 2009 included in our most recent issue.

    Sincerely,

    Sarah

Hi, @Tiffany Penn! Great question. (And thanks, @Amanda Bassett.)

We tend to follow the route @Alyssa Grovemiller and others have outlined - use the Class Notes section of our semi-annual publication to highlight alumni authors.

We once published a Summer Reading section in a spring edition of the newsletter, and included five or six authors who happened to have notified us about their publications. I remember being roundly upbraided by one of them who was concerned that their somewhat dark novel had been included in that heading. They certainly had a point - I should have checked. So be careful if you get too creative :-)

An online alumni book club might also be a possible way to feature them.

    Good luck!  Mark

Class notes in our magazine!  That makes it fair across the board to all. Otherwise, deciding who to feature becomes a challenge.

We have a page or spread in our magazine (printed and online) every spring for alumni to submit their books to be added to. We have a submission page where authors can note the title, a brief summary, and a cover photo (dartgo.org/bookshelf). Our first spread was one page but our most recent one was three pages (see attached file) so clearly the alumni appreciate the opportunity. Our class secretaries also include a reminder in their emails to their classmates for updates.

Happy to answer additional questions if helpful!
