I direct the Medical Student Research Office at the UT Health McGovern Medical School.  Helping medical students engage with research and connecting them to research opportunities at the Texas Medical Center is our mission.  I'd love to be a part of this conversation, which is a growing dialogue.

We are doing this, as are many schools with academic certificate and degree programs, through seminars, workshops, interactive search engines, and mentoring.  I am a big believer in collaboration and student input so have engaged academic student groups to partner with the office and to develop and enhance activities.  I am happy to share how we developed an office structure for this.  I'd also like to hear thoughts on developing an introductory, accessible research curriculum.  This is something that I am currently starting to develop.

I hope to hear your ideas.  Mary Horton

This sounds like a great opportunity for discussion. I would be very interested to learn what other medical schools have developed to help students secure research - especially in institutions not tied to an academic health center.  At this time, we have a couple of faculty members with a passion for research that help our students. One is overseeing over 200 projects at the moment. We also connect students with our GME Consortium staff. They connect the medical students with residents working on projects that want help that can be done remotely. Our challenge is with a class size of 435 students between our two campuses, it is more than the two faculty and the residents have the capacity for.

I look forward to further conversation on this!

Hi Everyone, I am the Director of the SOAR (Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research) Office, and we manage a research database. The objective of the SOAR research database is to enhance medical student research opportunities through a centralized platform that efficiently matches students with faculty and their projects. Since its initiation, SOAR has facilitated over 200 project opportunities for our medical students with faculty, serving as the primary institutional resource for understanding research regulations. Happy to connect and share ideas on this effort!

At SIU, we have 2 major research opportunities. The first, which has been around for a while, is an option for students to match with a professor or team doing research, and intern with them during the long break between M1 and M2, the Mentored Professional Enrichment Experience (MPEE).

Our newer option, which I am excited about, is the Research Scholars Pathway, which is a 4 year elective to recognize our students for their research efforts.

Hi! I'm a little late to this thread but excited to see the topic.  I'm the faculty director of Medical Student Research and Scholarship at Case Western Reserve University, where we require our 180 med students to conduct 12 weeks of research in the summer between M1 and M2.  We have a home-grown database of faculty/projects interested in hosting students but are looking around at other potential solutions.  We also have a curriculum in the first year to prepare them for the summer experience.  Look forward to engaging around either/both topics (mentor matching, curriculum).  This article has some helpful benchmarking information https://doi.org/10.1007/s40670-022-01679-7

    Hello everyone,

I agree that this could be a great discussion topic. I am the Program Administrator for the Department of Medical Student Research at the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences art Old Dominion University (formerly Eastern Virginia Medical School). Our department is a little over a year old and we would love to discuss what everyone else is doing and how we are hoping to shape our department going forward. Would love to hear ideas and "things you would have done differently" since we are in our early stages.

Currently I maintain a small database of external opportunities that I can share with students and tailor it to their interests as we have a initial consultation with them regarding their plans and experiences. We also maintain a database of consulted student profiles that we can share with faculty who may be interested in including students. This allows us to send faculty curated students based on the skillset the students have and the needs of the faculty.

Thanks for kicking off a great discussion on this topic, @Angela Spencer! I noticed that @Mary Horton mentioned wanting to meet to discuss this more. Are y'all interested in that? I would be happy to schedule a zoom call and kick start a Community Conversations call and/or series around research and scholarship opportunities for students!

A little context- Community Conversations bubble up when a topic shows a lot of interest and enthusiasm. A great example is the AI in Medical Education series. If you want to check one out, join us on July 31 at 2 pm. These calls provide a space for open conversation. There is no formal presentation or agenda, just a chance for the community to come together and talk about a key issue-- to learn with and from one another. Historically, we've opened breakout rooms based on topics, but we can flex and iterate on the structure that works best for this group.

If this is of interest to y'all- let me know your availability here.  @Shawn Owens @Christopher Mazur @Rosa Hand @Carolyn Pointer @Brianna Conyers @Mabel Perez-Oquendo @Katie Harden

    Hello Everyone,

I am new to AAMC, and UIC COM recently created the position that I currently hold to enhance research for medical students in general.  We have two sister campuses in Rockford and Peoria, IL that have similar roles for facilitating student research programs.  I am very interested in all of the points from this discussion so far and think it is a very important area due to the growing need and interest of research within our student body.  We do not currently have a database of research opportunities, however, we have various methods of disseminating information. We have our COM research opportunities webpage, COM Dean's newsletter, introduction to M1 students in the fall, the typical networking and word of mouth method, and also have a slack channel.

I'm very open to learning more about how other institutions are handling things and attending any discussions on the subject.

    Kind regards,

At our medical school, we are planning to develop a comprehensive and searchable database to help our students identify research projects that connect with faculty mentors. This proposed tool will allow the students to search for projects using specific terms, departments, research types, or keywords, and set up alerts for new opportunities that match their criteria. The database will feature detailed project listings . By integrating data from our office of research services, we intend to ensure consistency and regular updates. On top of this we are want to ensure the security and privacy of all data.

We also use a searchable database with multiple parameters.  One struggle we have found with this is getting faculty to use it and to input their information.  I think it does require significant administrative input and oversight.  It is an essential tool for the mission of helping students engage in research, but the tool must be accompanied by the administrative support.  This could be part of the content of our group meeting, how much help is needed and how is it best managed.

I am so excited to see all of this input from so many schools.  Thank you.

For Faculty part: We are trying to connect the Institutional data pieces ( e.g. sponsored projects, IRB, Research services, Clinical trials etc.) to this database. For schools, it depends on what grant management and clinical trials software system is used. But there will be researchers who are not funded but have labs- they will have to input them manually!

    Hello,

I'm a bit late to this discussion but very excited to be a part of it! Not too long ago I created www.PubLNX.com a website designed to connect medical students interested in participating in medical research with physicians and researchers looking for assistance with their projects. I am currently in talks with the administration at my home institution, Houston Methodist Hospital, with the hope of implementing it here and I would love to share it with all of you.

PubLNX is easy, intuitive, and really quick to use. Physicians and researchers at your institution can make an account and in less than 1 minute make a post about any research work they would like assistance with. Opportunities can vary from funded laboratory positions to interesting cases encountered in clinical practice that can be published as case reports. Opportunities can be further designated as onsite or remote. After a new post is made, students are notified via email and can apply online. Once the agreed upon work has been completed, both parties can provide written feedback and a star review for the other party, which become a part of their profile helping to keep all parties accountable.

I initially built PubLNX to make research opportunities available to all students nationwide, but due to credentialing requirements I can very easily customize the site to the needs of your institution (the website can be limited to only your students and faculty along with other customizations you may need). PubLNX can also help to increase the number of opportunities you can offer your students by increasing engagement with clinical faculty that often have smaller research opportunities like case reports etc.

If you or anyone else is interested in learning more about PubLNX, I would love to talk more! Please feel free to reach out with any questions, comments, or feedback about the site.

    Best wishes

    Hi all!

How are you advising students about listing their research experiences on ERAS?  If a single project leads to multiple outputs (eg 2 presentations) do you tell them to list each presentation separately?  I am hearing some concerns that this might be perceived as padding the CV.

    Thanks for any input!

I had this situation with a student mentee.  The student received advisement from her specialty specific faculty to choose the highest profile presentation.  This was different than the input I gave her but deferred to her specialty advisor.  I'm interested to hear about this topic as it has come up in my office as well as with my mentees.

    Hello Rosa,

In my experience as a PI, it is quite common for a single project to yield multiple abstracts-meaning the hypothesis tested or the outcomes of interest are different (enough) to warrant separate posters or oral presentations.  (This does not preclude combining the data into one major journal publication). In practice, this means the titles of the presentations are different, as are the abstracts. Should that not be the case, then the student should only list the presentation once, and prioritize the national presentation over a regional or intramural presentation.  It would indeed come across to a physician-scientist as padding the CV.

    Best,

    Kathy

While I have passed on the primary duties to other faculty, I am still interested in helping identify resources and opportunities for students. As such, i would like to join the discussion. I've registered for the next discussion meeting and would be appreciative to read the minutes from the initial meeting.

At Meharry, we developed external partnerships to help secure spots for our 115 students. This has been very exciting on many levels. This research requirement used to be required, but is now optional. We often have students who do not appreciate research, and it would be great join this discussion group to identify motivators and barriers that students (and institutions) may face in implementing and sustaining research opportunities.

    Hello!

I would love to hear where things are at with the individuals in this thread - what's working, what's not? We're hoping to find a way to track/offer alumni research opportunities for our students.

    Thank you for any input!

I am not sure about others, but for this fall, there will be optional class on research, plus they have hired someone to coordinate opportunities and there was a group that did a internal survey to medical students on this (they will report their findings next week I believe).

Hi @Kaitlyn Leaf, thank you for proposing some times to meet!  Here is a doodle poll for anyone interested to share when they are available: https://doodle.com/group-poll/participate/dGWmlmJd.

These times work best for me:

    July 10 at 2pm ET

    July 15 at 12pm

We are transitioning to Canvas and started a Canvas course to display research opportunities.  Students can search the opportunities on the course site and it is a step in the right direction, from manually updating a pdf of research opportunities to a website.

@Lori DeShetler- We didn't record yesterday's session but I want to provide a recap on this thread for everyone!

We discussed how often to meet and a little about future topics. The consensus on cadence of meetings is every other month. This leads us to September! Please fill out this doodle poll with your availability. @Rosa Hand agreed to be our meeting's next host. The next meeting will focus more on topical planning- you can anticipate breakout rooms based on regions and brainstorming future topics and agendas.

Another main point of discussion is how to collaborate and share information with one another! Encourage your colleagues to join us here in the virtual communities to keep the conversations going in between sessions. Previously we used Box as a hub for document sharing, but we no longer have access to that tool. While I am exploring other options, here is a contact list form that you can input your information and a view sheet so that you can see all the contact info.

Some resources were shared during the call too. Check out this webinar that some folks found helpful on debunking the research arms race. And attached you will find a document that @Mary Rojas put together after convening a meeting around mentorship and research opportunities.

I think that covers everything, so for now, stay tuned for more info and keep the conversation going in here!

    Hi everyone!
We are looking forward to our next community conversation on the topic of Research Opportunities for Medical Students on 9/16 at 1 Eastern. Please register here.
I've volunteered as the host/facilitator for this session.  My goal for this session is to help us make connections in smaller regional groups (aligning with the AAMC regions),and identify topics for future meetings.
Please come prepared to share two things with your regional colleagues: 1) something you're especially proud of or excited about in your school's efforts to support student research/research opportunities, and 2) something you're struggling with in this arena.  Based on the areas of pride or struggle that are shared, each region-based group will be asked to volunteer one topic and leader for a future conversation.
Hope to see many of you there!
    Rosa

Hello hello! Thank you to everyone who joined us on Tuesday! There was a lot of great conversation and idea sharing during our call. Because this call used breakout rooms and was focused on sharing ideas, we did not record. The next couple of events we can though! The majority of our attendees were from the Central and Southern regions, so please encourage your colleagues from the Northeast and Western regions to join us next time! Which leads me to the dates and times we coordinated for the fall/winter.

For anyone interested, here's the summary from the Central Region breakout rooms:

Some things people do well/are proud of:
--summer programs that aren't required but get a lot of interest
--connecting with department level staff as point people
--working research into the curriculum even if it isn't required, through 1-4 hour courses
--Lots of support from schools including substantial FTEs, inclusion of mentoring in promotion process
--focusing on mental wellness in relation to student activities
Some people things have trouble with:
    --getting enough mentors
    --finding the right department contacts
    --mentors aren't compensated
--mentors might not have a university affiliation which means it's not as valued
--projects take longer than people expect
--tracking projects and successes can be quite manual/time consuming
    --not enough staff support
Topics to consider for future discussion:
--how involved do research program staff/faculty get involved in the actual student projects?
    --successes/ideas in tracking databases etc
--how to create connections at hospitals
--students seeking mentors vs matching them (pros/cons)
    --travel funding procedures

    Hi Research Office colleagues!

We are working to clarify our expectations for research extension years and are curious what other institutions are doing.

Does your school allow other activities (clinical electives etc) to occur during a research extension year?

If yes, what is there a maximum amount of time spent in those other activities within a year?

    Thank you!

    Hi all,
We are looking forward to our community conversation tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov 18, at 12:00 pm CT / 1:00 pm ET. Nikki Hinrich and I will be co-facilitating a group discussion on best practices for engaging mentors in medical student research activities and partnering with affiliated institutions to expand student research and scholarship.
Our goal for this session is to identify common pitfalls and best practices across institutions, and for each of us to leave with two actionable items to implement at our home institution.
    Thanks,
    Mabel

    Hey there, everyone!!

I'm so grateful for this community and another great call in the books! Yesterday we talked about how to work with hospital systems and discussed different ways to engage with mentors. It was clear that establishing a solid relationship with folks makes for a great path for communication. One note that I typed up is: Liaisons are a first step for different systems working together- a path for for schools and hospital systems to share information.

What notes do y'all have from the call? Any particular insights that struck you?

    Here's a list of some resources/suggestions shared:

Join us in the new year for the next conversation!! Info below.

Hi all - I'm the inaugural Director of Medical Student Research at Brown University and so glad to have just discovered this community!  I have many of the same questions and we just started a research project database- happy to share what I've learned as did not really know the best way to do this and still working out some kinks.

Also interested to know what people are doing regarding advising students about the new ERAS "Scholarly Work" section that will limit research publication listings to the top 3 "groups" of works.  I'm personally overall in favor of this system as inflation was becoming crazy, but also would love to share ideas how to best advise students.
