The Masks We Wear
We all wear masks in this office.
Some are made from cloth, others woven from experience.
The patient's experiences of discrimination, desperation and dismissal casting his face in fear.
The physician's experiences of listening, ignoring, and rejecting hardening her face in false empathy.
My experience as powerless witness painting my face in a silent scream.

From "Creativity in Times of Uncertainty," an AAMC collection of 55-word stories and poems that captured the experiences of healthcare professionals and trainees during the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and racial injustice.
Through the Fundamental Role of Arts and Humanities in Medical Education (FRAHME), the AAMC provides resources to help medical educators start, develop, and/or improve the use of arts and humanities in their teaching.
REGISTER NOW for an AAMC webinar June 12 on exploring the integration of arts and humanities for teaching health equity. In recognition of Juneteenth, speakers will share ways they have empowered learners to provide and advocate for equitable health care access and outcomes for Black patients.
