  • 1.  Stethoscope Ceremony

    Hi All -

Doing a bit of crowdsourcing, and would love to hear from institutions who host a stethoscope ceremony for incoming medical students. What does your event/program consist of? Who speaks during the event? Who coordinates the event? How are alumni involved? Do you do anything to make it fun, festive, symbolic, etc?

    Thanks!

    Hi Lindsay,

At the Tufts University School of Medicine, Maine Track Program (Medical Students - Maine Track Program | MaineHealth), This is held during our orientation week!  We hold our ceremony as part of what we call the "McKusick Lecture". We frame this as their first lecture in medical school, and our speakers have been healthcare leaders, U.S. Senators, members of tribal nations, etc. We then present them with their stethescopes, take group pictures, and hold a reception with the program. We are unique as we are a specialized track located within a large tertiary hospital, so we invite folks from around the health system to join as well. Students can invite family and friends if they wish.

    Hi Lindsay,

Our stethoscope presentation consists of a welcome from the executive director of the medical alumni association, as well as some remarks from our dean of students (who is also an alum and board member). Before students receive their stethoscope, we have them write a thank you note to someone in their life whom they are thankful for for, and we also start their class scholarship fund by encouraging every student to donate a dollar, which our office will then match what they collectively raise as a class. The overall theme of our stethoscope presentation is to instill a culture of philanthropy in the first-year students.

We invite our local board members to participate by distributing stethoscopes. After students have received their stethoscope, we transition to a fun, informal cookout for the students, board members, and other student volunteers.

Happy to answer any questions or chat more about it!

    Hi Lindsay,

We call this Stethoscope Breakfast at Mizzou Med (University of Missouri School of Medicine). This is a separate event from our White Coat Ceremony. It is handled by our alumni office. Our stethoscopes are made by a company that put our logo on them.

Our alumni pay for and receive their first stethoscope. We invite them to the breakfast and make sure that at least one alumni is sitting at each table with the students. The buffet-style breakfast is catered by either a local company or our hospital catering department. We require them to dress casually- tablecloths on the tables, flowers, etc., it is almost set up like a banquet. We invite alumni to give the opening address speech. One of the alumni will call each student up one by one to receive their stethoscope, and get their picture taken, and inside each box is a note written by alumni. The students also write a thank you note back. There are a few more components involved.

    Hi Lindsay,

Hope this message finds you well! Attached is the program from my white coat ceremony last August - it consisted of introductions/remarks from administrators, white coat/stethoscope presentations, and reciting of a Hippocratic oath-like pledge.

    Hope this helps!
