This year, as part of a series depicting American women on the quarter, the US Mint is circulating quarters honoring Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, a Civil War-era surgeon and the only woman to receive the Medal of Honor.
She was known for being a non-conformist (she wore trousers and was ridiculed her entire life for dressing practically). She was also a feminist, suffragist, suspected spy, and a prisoner of war. Her story is fascinating! Read more about her here.
