  • 1.  "The Power of Us" discussion and book club

    Posted 11-17-2022 12:12:00 PM
Did you attend the Learn Serve Lead conversation with Jay Van Bavel, PhD? Did you miss it but are interested in Jay's work? All of us who have attended Learn, Serve, Lead, know how energizing and inspiring the meeting is for attendees.

To leverage and extend that energy, we're hosting an LSL tie-in Book Club – to bring together both attendees and those unable to attend. We've selected The Power of Us (Bavel and Packer) from the proposed meeting reading list. Those in Nashville who attend the November 12th at 1:30 session The Power of Us: Improve Performance, Increase Cooperation & Promote Social Harmony can bring added insight to the book discussion.

This discussion of identity – what it is, how it is shaped and reshaped, how it can be a positive (or negative) force – couldn't be more timely. Read the summary (and/or chapter highlights) to whet your appetite, then plan to join the Book Club discussions!

We know your schedules are full, so we've varied the days and times. You don't have to attend all!

Please note that you do not need to attend LSL, all three sessions, or have read the book, to participate. Join @Nancy Hayes, one of our virtual community volunteer champions, who is hosting this series. Use this time to meet others in the virtual communities and who may have highlights to share from the book and author.

Take a look at some of the videos available to further the discussion.

You can learn more about other items at Learn Serve Lead, including reading and sharing the crowdsourced notes from the event.

Does that quotation capture your imagination? Did enjoy the stories in the videos Penny linked?  If so, bring your thoughts and questions and join the book club discussion tomorrow at 1 EST.  Everyone is welcome -- all that's required is interest!

Whoever came up with the idea of the crowd-sourced notes at LSL deserves a thank you! I hope the idea catches on. It's a great resource for those who have to choose between 2 sessions. (or more)

Hi Nancy, where do we find the crowd sourced notes? I agree, this was a great idea as there weee several times I wanted to be in 2-3 places at once.

Thanks to @Penny Schnarrs for promoting our Virtual Communities Book Club based on The Power Of Us. It was a new endeavor, and I hope the start of a tradition. Thanks to those who were able to take time from their schedules and join in. In each session we enjoyed thought-provoking conversations and made new community connections.

For those who weren't able to join, I'd like to share one insight that repeatedly came up: the importance of appreciating the complexity of the sense of self. With a better understanding of how our identities are formed, evolve, and change (and why we get defensive!), we can promote civility in all our interactions with others and in doing so derive the benefits of diversity.

It strikes me that the Virtual Communities are like an "action item" from the book! – a place where we can "harness our shared identities" to work on issues large and small that are important to us. Or – as the author signed his books – to use that Power Of Us for good.

What a beautiful recap, @Nancy Hayes Thank YOU for being such a great facilitator and helping to bring people together around this great topic.  For those who joined us, or would like to participate in the future, I hope you will consider filling in this quick survey to help us select the next book for discussion.
