Judith Humphrey, author of leadership and communication books such as Speaking as a Leader, suggests 4 ways that anyone can demonstrate leadership skills in a job interview:
- Have a leader's mindset. Think beyond hierarchies. Come to the interview ready to inspire-not just inform-the interviewer. Don't be afraid to show visionary thinking.
- Script yourself as a leader. Be prepared to tell your own story. In addition to preparing answers to questions you know you will be asked, prepare to ask your own questions.
- Use the language of leadership. Use language that shows your conviction about the job and your readiness for it. Use collaborative words (we, our team vs. I, myself).
- Have a leader's presence. Use your body language, voice, eye contact to show your warmth and enthusiasm.
Do you have any additional tips to add to this list? Have you seen a candidate demonstrate leadership skills in other ways during interviews?
