Artificial intelligence generating tools, like ChatGPT, are now being used to create everything from high school essays, to poetry, to resumes and cover letters. As a hiring manager seeking to ascertain a person’s qualifications, how can you tell if a candidate’s application relied on something like ChatGPT? Here are some clues to look for:

    • Use of generic phrases or language so general that it misses the context of your job posting
    • Repetitive language or language that too closely mirrors the text in your job posting without personalization or customization
    • Lack of personality
    • Mismatched writing style between resume and other application materials (like cover letter or emails to HR)
    • Lack of quantitative or measurable achievements and results
    • Strange or irregular formatting‌

There are online scanning programs that can detect if a piece of content has been AI generated. Are any of your institutions using an AI-detecting software to screen for this?
