Tip Tuesday: “If loving data is wrong, I don’t want to be right” and other cover letter opening lines

According to an article from career resource company, The Muse, hiring managers are looking for something more exciting from job applicants than the traditional opening line “I am excited to apply for the position of ____.”

I don’t know if that is true—or true of hiring managers in academic medicine—but I did enjoy reading some of the recommended alternatives:

    • “I’ve been giving my friends and family free style advice since I was 10, and recently decided it’s time I get paid for it.”
    • “When I was growing up, I wanted to be one of those people who pretend to be statues on the street. Thankfully, my career goals have become a little more aspirational over the years, but I still love to draw a crowd and entertain the masses—passions that make me the perfect community manager.”
    • “My last boss once told me that my phone manner could probably defuse an international hostage situation.”

As a hiring manager, how would you react to a creative opening line like this on a resume cover letter?
