  • 1.  Tip Tuesday: Recommended reading on parental leave and working parenthood

    Posted 09-06-2022 08:48:00 AM

I’m returning to the AAMC after some months of parental leave (hi! It’s great to be back here in this community) and wanted to share some recommended reading for new parents out there who may be navigating these waters as I am.

I suspect that many of you in this community have valuable advice to share on the topics of parental leave, navigating return to work, and balancing family and career goals–and I want to hear from you! Our team will share some resources on these issues here in Open Forum this month and we hope you’ll add to the conversation.

      • takes a data-driven approach to applying research-proven, practical tools for work-life balance
    • Work. Pump. Repeat, by Jessica Shortall
      • practical advice on breastfeeding and going back to work.
      • My personal tip: I set blocks on  my calendar for when I need to pump!
      • full disclosure: Mihalich-Levin is a former AAMC employee. She has started a program, Mindful Return, that supports parents as they return to the workplace after parental leave. Next week we will share with you some valuable advice she gives parents on how to navigate the complexities of business travel.

Of course, I’d be remiss not to end this post with a picture of my son. Community friends, say “hello” to Desi Weiner! He turned 6 months old in August and I'm smitten!

Welcome back, Stephanie, and welcome, Desi!

One book that came to mind was Darcy Lockman's All the Rage: Mothers, Fathers, and the Myth of Equal Partnership. Lockman looks at how even egalitarian-minded people "unintentionally perpetuate old norms"-for example, in heterosexual couples "where both parents work full-time and agree that tasks should be equally shared," but where nonetheless, "mothers' household management, mental labor, and childcare contributions still outweigh fathers'."
