  • 1.  Tip Tuesday: Resource for improving institutional DEI policies at medical schools

    Posted 11-15-2022 07:39:00 AM

Working to improve your medical school’s diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) climate and culture? Start by examining institutional-level policies, practices and activities.

The AAMC has recently released a report from the collective findings of 101 medical schools that completed the Diversity, Inclusion, Culture, and Equity (DICE) Inventory. The report provides a baseline illustration of the current state of DEI activities, policies, and procedures at medical schools, and offers promising practices for schools to consider.

A new AAMCNews article examines how medical schools made use of the DICE inventory to assess and improve their institutional DEI climate and culture, and what several deans said they gained from the experience.

Thank you for sharing, Penny. I downloaded the report and look forward to reading it. Many of my colleagues were at AAMC this year so they probably heard about it though I send some of our leadership the links to the report and the blog article. Many of our faculty have expressed interest in learning more about microaggressions - ensuring they are not the accidental deliverer of a microaggression and how to handle situations where they are the receiver of a microaggression.

Great call-out regarding microaggressions - according to the report, many schools implement trainings that address sexual harassment, microaggressions, and implicit bias, some of which are annually mandatory.  @Toni Gallo @Clarence Fluker, would love to know if you have any suggestions for resources and/or trainings regarding microaggressions.  Anyone else have any tips or thoughts? Please let us know!

I would echo @Max Anderson's request for more information on microaggressions. Often, the training modules give one or two examples that are fairly striking. However, it would be helpful to have many more examples available from which to learn including examples that are much more nuanced. It would also be important to have examples on other topics where norms of behavior or wording may have shifted over the years.  Generic modules, designed for university settings as a whole, are useful but examples from medical school, and especially, clinical settings would be very valuable.

A few Academic Medicine articles come to mind:

This article details practical approaches for addressing microaggressions depending on how you're involved in the situation (recipient, source, bystander). The supplemental digital content includes scenarios to practice the suggested approaches.

This article describes students' perceptions of their supervisors' responses to microaggressions in the clinical learning environment. Take a look at Figure 1 which includes a bystander microaggression intervention guide. This article used scenarios from Stanford's Project Respect to look at gender-based microaggressions. The project webpage has more extensive resources and training.

MedEdPORTAL also has resources and trainings around addressing microaggressions that might be of interest: https://www.mededportal.org/action/doSearch?AllField=microaggressions.

I had an idea you might have some resources of note, thanks so much for this @Toni Gallo and while I know folks are eager to see our work on this topic, I hope others will share what they are doing at their institutions as well.
