  • 1.  Workshop on Medical Illustration at the American College of Surgeons' Clinical Congress

    Posted 08-14-2025 06:25:00 PM

Here's to hoping that there are a few surgeons in this community ;)

For the first time, the Clinical Congress will feature a didactic course on medical illustration for the surgeon; drawing tutorials, alternating with discussions on effective use of visual communication to explain (to patients) and teach (students, residents and faculty) and hands-on exercises (to quote the official blurb, "Do you want to be able to draw better for your patients? To share your research findings with a broader audience? To understand what this field of medical illustration is all about? Then this course is for you. You will also learn about the history of medical illustration, its place in modern medicine, its controversies, and the role of biomedical visualization in ensuring equal access to healthcare for all."

Yes, this is a little bit of shameless self-promotion - but it is also very significant, because the very next day, the prestigious Martin Memorial Lecturer will be Dr. David J. Skorton (AAMC's President and CEO), who has in the past talked about how STEM and the liberal arts nourish each other. Who knew that behind their impassive masks, surgeons could have a soft spot for humanism and the arts?

Not a surgeon but very interested in learning to improve my skills in this area to communicate ideas visually. Please share other learning opportunities that you might offer in the future outside of this conference.

    Kara,

Thanks for the comments, and funny you should mention it: I am putting in a proposal for a 90-minute workshop for the 2026 PAS meeting in Boston (for the non-pediatricians: Pediatric Academic Societies meeting). What is also intersting is that a number of former (undergrad) students, now in medical schools, have started to emulate this; and they have invited me to participate remotely as well: at UT Southwest (Dallas), Mt Sinai and others.

Belated follow-up on this earlier post: We had a very successful workshop on medical illustration at the most recent Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons - more than decent attendance for this inaugural workshop (and despite a hefty registration fee - not our fault, that's what the College charges for 4 CME credits...). In fact, we were told that we have been renewed for next season - eh, conference, fall 2026. (The Congress's keynote speaker was Dr. Skorton, so that alone was worth the price of admission).

Congratulations on this workshop!  For those who cannot join you, please let this community know how it goes. Can't wait to hear and excited you are bringing the arts to the surgery community in this way.
