Here's to hoping that there are a few surgeons in this community ;)
For the first time, the Clinical Congress will feature a didactic course on medical illustration for the surgeon; drawing tutorials, alternating with discussions on effective use of visual communication to explain (to patients) and teach (students, residents and faculty) and hands-on exercises (to quote the official blurb, "Do you want to be able to draw better for your patients? To share your research findings with a broader audience? To understand what this field of medical illustration is all about? Then this course is for you. You will also learn about the history of medical illustration, its place in modern medicine, its controversies, and the role of biomedical visualization in ensuring equal access to healthcare for all."
Yes, this is a little bit of shameless self-promotion - but it is also very significant, because the very next day, the prestigious Martin Memorial Lecturer will be Dr. David J. Skorton (AAMC's President and CEO), who has in the past talked about how STEM and the liberal arts nourish each other. Who knew that behind their impassive masks, surgeons could have a soft spot for humanism and the arts?
