Educational Resources

  • Gun Violence Education in Medical School: A Call to Action
    • To manage the burden of injury from gun violence and identify prevention strategies, physician leaders must understand the biological and psychosocial aspects of this complex problem. However, gun violence and its complexities are not widely taught in medical schools. This Observation article details why gun violence education is not being included in medical education, offers an informed, science-based model for the disease of gun violence, and suggests methods to integrate gun violence education into medical school curricula.
  • Reducing the Health Harms of Firearm Violence
    • This 2024 report from the Aspen Health Strategy Group, whose membership includes AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton, MD, examines gun violence and posits how the United States can support those impacted, proposing five ideas for reducing the health harms of firearm injury.

  • Firearm Injury Prevention: Medical Student Education Program
    • Physicians often do their most important work in prevention. Yet, few talk with patients and families about firearm injury prevention. Some clinicians may be uncomfortable with the topic having never learned in medical school how to ensure these conversations are accurate, effective, and focused on health. The NEJM Group are providing free training to address this gap.
