Celebrating 150 Years of Academic Medicine

This year, the AAMC marks 150 years of serving and leading academic medicine — a milestone made possible by the collective leadership, innovation, and commitment of our members, their institutions, and the communities they serve.

Since 1876, the AAMC, together with our member institutions, has helped shape progress across:

  • Medical education
  • Biomedical research
  • Clinical care
  • Community collaborations
  • National advocacy on behalf of academic medicine

Anniversary Themes

Our 150th anniversary is grounded in three guiding themes:

  • Shaping the future

These themes come to life through storytelling, digital engagement, and community-driven participation throughout the year.

How to Engage

We invite you to explore, reflect, and engage with this resource throughout the year. The timeline is designed to be used, not just viewed, and we hope you’ll help bring it to life across your networks and communities.

Each prompt is designed to help you translate academic medicine’s shared history into content that feels relevant, timely, and discussion-worthy for your audience.

We use “communities” broadly to reflect the many spaces where dialogue and connection happen across academic medicine. This could include AAMC virtual communities, institutional or departmental teams, affinity groups, classrooms, leadership cohorts, or facilitated settings like retreats, workshops, or meetings. The goal is to spark reflection, invite diverse perspectives, and create space for shared learning.
